Ironman in Hermosa Beach marks the start of Independence Day celebrations

Last year, the sand in Hermosa Beach remained untouched on the Fourth of July, as the city’s beach remained closed because of COVID-19 health restrictions. But, it was a vastly different scene Sunday morning, July 4, as more than 500 competitors stampeded through the sand. The Hermosa Beach Ironman was back, bringing with it the promise of a post-pandemic summer.

Hermosa Beach teen spearheads project to paint lifeguard tower rainbow for Pride Month

Eighteen-year-old Izzy Bacallao pushed to have a lifeguard tower in Hermosa Beach painted rainbow in honor of Pride Month. They came up with the idea after learning a Pride lifeguard tower had been burned down in Long Beach.

Glow Ride for Cystic Fibrosis returns to Hermosa Beach

Glowing bikes lit up the South Bay’s beach cities Saturday evening, Aug. 21, during the annual fundraiser for the nonprofit Claire’s Place Foundation. The Glow Ride for Cystic Fibrosis, in its seventh year, honors local Claire Wineland, who founded the eponymous nonprofit as a teenager to support children and families impacted by cystic fibrosis. Wineland died from the disease in 2018 when she was 21 years old.

Redondo Beach artist finds inner artist amid pandemic

Throughout the pandemic, Carol Schreiner has been working to create chalk and bottle cap art work in her Redondo Beach neighborhood. Since the start of the pandemic, though she’s lost track, she estimates she has created 30 to 40 art pieces.

500-plus attend Manhattan Beach’s ‘burst the bubble on racism’ protest for kids

Nearly 500 people attended a protest specially designed for children on Saturday morning, June 6, to condemn police brutality and the death of George Floyd at the Manhattan Pier. The protest, dubbed ‘Burst the Bubble’ on racism, was organized by a group of four South Bay mothers whose goal was to educate and empower children in the community.

Hundreds participated in a Stand with Ukraine Rally in Santa Monica on Saturday, March 12, 2022. Demonstrators marched through the 3rd Street Promenade calling for an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Meet The People On The Front Lines Of LA’s Latino Vaccination Efforts

Susana Moncada and her husband Jose Luis Torres work as “promotores,” health promoters, for Clínica Romero, which serves mostly Latino patients at two L.A. locations. The clinic is one of several organizations L.A. County contracted with last fall as part of its Community Health Worker Outreach Initiative in communities most affected by the virus.
